NO SURPRISES ACT

Your Rights and Protections Against Surprise Medical Bills

Effective Date: January 1, 2026

Understanding the No Surprises Act

The No Surprises Act is a federal law that took effect on January 1, 2022, and is designed to protect patients from unexpected medical bills in certain healthcare situations. The purpose of this law is to promote transparency and ensure patients understand potential costs before receiving care.

At Legacy Family Chiropractic, we support clear communication and informed decision-making. We believe patients should have a reasonable understanding of fees and financial responsibility prior to beginning care.

When You Are Protected From Balance Billing

Balance billing occurs when a patient is billed for the difference between what an insurance plan pays and the provider’s full charge. Under the No Surprises Act, patients are protected from balance billing in specific circumstances, including:

  • Emergency services, even when provided by an out-of-network provider

  • Non-emergency services performed by an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility, when the patient has not consented to out-of-network charges

These protections are defined by federal law and may not apply to all healthcare services or situations.

Good Faith Estimates for Uninsured or Self-Pay Patients

If you do not have insurance or choose not to use insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges for your care.

A Good Faith Estimate provides an anticipated cost based on the information available at the time and is intended to help you plan financially. Please note:

  • You may request a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling services

  • When applicable, estimates are provided in writing prior to care

  • A Good Faith Estimate is not a bill and does not guarantee final charges

  • Actual charges may vary depending on services rendered

If you receive a bill that is $400 or more above your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute the charges through a federal dispute resolution process.

For more information about your rights under the No Surprises Act or how to initiate a dispute, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.
